Step-by-step Installation

These quick start instructions are here to get you up to speed with the new VDatum release.

1. Create a VDatum working folder

The VDatum working folder is needed in order to hold VDatum running files and dataset. The folder may have any name. For the remainder of this page, it is assumed that you name this folder as "VDatum".

All downloaded files and dataset shall be extracted to the VDatum working folder.

2. Download VDatum software

 VDatum_227.zip - 110Kb - version: 2.2.7 November 04, 2009.

Extract this file to the VDatum working folder.
The VDatum working folder shall look like this .
You can actually use VDatum software now for converting data among ellipsoid datums (for example, NAD83, ITRF2000, WGS72, etc..).

3. Download transformation grids

Including national and regional coverage dataset.

Regional coverage dataset:

transformation grids that supporting conversions from/to/among tidal datums.

For user's convenience, VDatum_Regional100109.zip (~248Mb [October 01, 2009]) contains all current available regional coverage dataset and the VDatum area information (varea.inf) file.

For downloading a single or several VDatum areas, download the VDatum area information file varea.inf  and your choice of regional transformation grid dataset:

For example, the working folder with Tampa Bay, Florida dataset will look like this  after extracting compressed files.

National coverage dataset:

transformation grids that supporting conversions among orthometric and ellipsoidal datums.

National coverage dataset include transformation grids for several NOAA / NGS's Geodetic models such as NADCON, VERTCON and GEOIDs, which support conversions among orthometric and ellipsoid datums.

For user's convenience, VDatum_National.zip (~ 147Mb) [October 01, 2009] contains all national coverage dataset.

  • For horizontal conversions from or to NAD27, download NADCON transformation grids (VDatum_NADCON.zip - 1.83Mb [October 01, 2009]). Extract this file to VDatum working folder.
    The working folder shall look like this .

  • For conversions between ellipsoid datums and orthometric datums, or between ellipsoid datums and tidal datums, download GEOID transformation grids (VDatum_GEOIDxx.zip). Extract this file to VDatum working folder.
    The working folder shall look like this .

  • For conversions from or to NGVD29, download VERTCON transformation grids (VDatum_VERTCON.zip - 2.39Mb [October 01, 2009]). Extract this file to VDatum working folder.
